Collagen Treatments

When someone refers to collagen treatments, they are probably referring to collagen injections. These treatments come in injection form. Basically a dermatologist or plastic surgeon injects collagen into certain areas of your face and body in order to fill the area.

In doing so, imperfections in the skin such as wrinkles, scars, and fine lines are less noticeable and more flawless skin is revealed. When used this way, the procedure is often done with a face lift or laser skin resurfacing. Apart from this use, however, collagen is also used to accentuate a person’s lips by making them look like they have fuller lips.

What exactly is collagen? It is a natural protein found in bone, cartilage, skin, and tendons. There are actually 27 types of collagen that naturally occur in our bodies. These different types are responsible for strengthening our bones, providing fluid movement in our muscles, and (most significantly to this topic) providing our skin with strength and elasticity, which is important for keeping wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of aging at bay.

During our youth our body is filled with collagen, which is why the skin is best when we are young. As we age, however, the skin loses its elasticity because the collagen production is slowing down, and the current collagen breaks down. Collagen treatments can replace the body’s natural supply of collagen in areas where the loss is really noticeable, such as places where wrinkles and sagging have already started.
